SIGNIFICANCE AND GUIDELINES GOVERNING USE OF THE LOGO OF ST. PAUL UNIVERSITY PARISH AT WICHITA STATE
The Official Logo of St. Paul University Parish
The Logo Imagery and Its Meaning and Significance:
roman laurels constructed from wheat:
there is a twofold significance to this element in the logo. The first and most important is that the wheat symbolizes the most precious gift we have at St. Paul, the Eucharist. St. Peter, in the Acts of the Apostles says: i do not have silver or gold, but what I do have I give to you..." St. Peter and St. Paul are the two statues in the Vatican City Square, as the two "Great Apostles", and they share a feast day together on June 29 (usually this feast coincides with Kansas farmers harvesting their wheat crop. The second dimension we wanted to communicate was our affiliation and service to the Wichita State University community. Known as the "Wheat Shockers, this element in the logo is ripe with meaning.
the sword and shield
Sword: Most depictions of St. Paul keep the Tradition, whereby St. Paul is standing, holding a sword. To be absolutely clear, this element is no signification of violence, but rather symbolize the operation of Grace and God's Word from the Letter to the Hebrews (4:12), whose authorship is attributed to St. Paul and in the pauline tradition, and it is in this fourth chapter of Hebrews, St. Paul writes that “the Word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword….” Our discipleship is all or nothing, as the Lord Himself says, and we are told to cut out of our lives anything that holds us back from giving ourselves entirely to Him.
Shield: Often seen in Catholic Heraldry, the shield symbolizes the words the promise of God's protecting help, and our need to take up the spiritual weaponry to be defended from all Evil, St. Paul writes to the Church "Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens." (Ephesians 6:11-12
color of black and gold
The black and Gold of the St. Paul Logo helps to signify the identity of our St. Paul College Parish Community, which is meant to serve the wider university community. Without using any university imagery, and creating an image uniquely our own, the color scheme provides a wonderful way to show the long-standing affiliation between St. Paul and Wichita State
